How to Be Happy 


"What you really want
is to be happy, yes?

Whether you want enlightenment
or a new house
or to lose ten pounds,
you are looking
with these things
to be happy.

And what is that feeling of happiness?
It is the feeling that
you are content with how you are,
you are completely accepting
of yourself as you are.

But in your belief,
it is the new house
that will make you 
content with how you are.

If you lose the ten pounds,
or get enlightened,
or find the perfect mate,
then you can accept yourself as you are,
then you will be content.

But if you look,
whenever you get what you want,
it does not bring contentment.
Perhaps for a while,
you are happy with what you achieved
or acquired
and then that dissatisfaction creeps
back into the front of your view
and you seek to improve 
or acquire something else.

That is why
I say 
accept yourself as you are.

And the way to accept yourself as you are
is to experience yourself as you are.

Right here, right now,
notice your experience.

Allow yourself to feel
what is here completely,
without definition
or description.

To feel it
as sensation
the feeling that you exist.

If you are resting
in the experience of what is here,
then there is no looking
for something else.

And in the absence of that seeking,
there is only awareness,
there is only contentment
which is what you were looking for
in the first place,
yes?
