Mindfulness Meditation Exercise:

How to Remain the Witness in Meditation
"Remember when you were a child
and you wanted to pick everything up off the ground?

And your mother or father had to teach you 'put that down;'
'don't pick that up.'

But everything looked so appetizing to pick up
and put in your mouth; the shiny shard of a broken bottle,
dirty tissues and all of the other trash.

Eventually you learn not to pick things up.

One of the reasons we meditate and practice mindfulness
exercises is to practice not picking anything up.

It is a discipline. Every thought arises and it looks so attractive you want to
grab hold of it, you want to latch on to it and say 'this is about me.'

But the discipline is not to pick it up; to let thoughts go and remain in consciousness.

First you awaken to consciousness; you become familiar with being awareness;
with resting in this moment as awareness itself.

Then you learn to remain in consciousness, in witnessing
rather than getting caught up in thought.

As you do this, all of the magnetic pulls to get caught up in thinking start to burn away.

It doesn't happen at once. It is an ongoing process of dissolving your attachments
to thoughts and emotions.

But the end result is you become happy for no reason.

The joy and peace at the essence of this moment
is no longer hidden by your involvement with thinking.

It is free to shine unconditionally.
