"You place great importance on the need for Shakti Energy whether it be listening to your Shakti Energy CDs or sitting with Enlightened Teachers.
What is Shakti and why is it so important to my own meditation and spiritual awakening?
First, let's look at what we mean by Shakti Energy. Really, Shakti means energy, but as we tend to think of energy as either physical energy, electricity, we will refer to the Sanskrit term, Shakti.
Shakti is the energy that is the essence of everything. It is what everything is made of. You are made of this energy. Your thoughts are made of this energy. Your breath is made of this energy. Everything you see, touch,, feel, taste, hear, smell, think; everything is this energy.
Although this essay here about Shiva & Shakti gives a good Vedic understanding of Shakti, let's talk about it in a way that we can easily understand and how it can be used to dramatically deepen our meditation and for awakening kundalini.
First a little background:
In Hinduism, Shiva is the representation of transcendental, unmanifest consciousness.
Consciousness, which is awareness, is transcendent of everything. It exists prior to thinking, prior to physical manifestation. Whatever you think, whatever you experience, there is that which is aware of the experience, aware of the thoughts.
This awareness exists prior to the thoughts. Even if there are no thoughts, awareness still remains. It always remains. It is the backdrop of everything. It is the clean sheet of paper on which all words and pictures appear and disappear.
When you attain the level of pure consciousness/awareness in meditation (Samadhi), you have freed yourself from the confines of being identified with body and mind. You experience yourself completely free of all stress, all desire all problems, all pain, all identity. For however long it lasts, you are in extraordinary formless peace and freedom.
You can experience this to a certain degree in this very moment:
Close your eyes for half a minute and just become aware of awareness itself. Awareness has nothing to do with thinking, it is what is watching thinking. Become aware of that watcher. Become aware of that which is watching everything. Do this now.
If you did this exercise above, you found that awareness has no form, has no identity, has no boundaries. It exists prior to thinking, prior to the physical. The more you explore awareness, the more vast it becomes. The more peaceful and free you feel.
So the Shiva aspect of meditation is turning your attention back to the essential awareness that is transcendent of everything.
But what about our normal waking state in the physical form with thoughts and emotions? How does this pure consciousness relate to our day to day reality?
And the answer is through Shakti Energy. Out of pure consciousness arises this energy and out of this energy there is manifestation. From this energy, you are a body, you think, you feel; there is a world.
Yet althought this energy is form, it is also consciousness, the witness of everything. It is what you are made of, yet it also is completely transcendent of you at the same time. It is not bound or imprisoned by you or any object in any way.
And lets not forget one very important thing:
Shakti is the energy of bliss!
So when you realize and experience that everything is energy, you will also begin to feel everything as bliss. This means you could experience anger and at the same time you would experience that anger as bliss!
While the advaitic approach to enlightenment is to remain in transendental consciousness, thus in a way turning your attention away from outer experience, Shakti connects you in consciousness to your normal day to day reality at the level of bliss.
Through Shakti and awakening the kundalini, everything is felt as one bliss energy moving, creating, dissolving all on its own. Everything is this bliss.
This is all well and good but how do you get to this state of bliss, of pure consciousness & bliss?
And this is where Shakti Energy comes in. Although everything is made of this energy, most people are unaware of it. They are so identified with perceiving this moment through thinking, that the more suble experience of energy is only lightly felt or not felt at all.
But Shakti Energy can be transmitted in the form of bliss from an enlightened being.
Often, just by sitting in the presence of an enlightened being, you actually feel bliss being radiated, being transmitted by the teacher. There are other ways to receive it that we will get to soon.
But by receiving Shakti Energy, you automatically feel energy, and sometimes instantly, you will also feel the energy as bliss.
This is energy is what everything is made of, so it is of the highest intelligence and its very nature is to awaken you into the realization that you are bliss. So it can awaken you into the highest states of meditation for more efficientally and easily than you trying to do it on your own. In this way you see trying to do it on your own often is the greatest obstacle to meditation.
But when you receive Shakti and you just rest in the moment, allowing the bliss to be, the bliss will awaken you into the deepest states of meditation without you having to do much at all.
So very simply, Shakti is the bliss that meditates you, awakens you, heals you, nurtures you and dissolves all of the obstacles that are in the way of your own spiritual awakening.
And once you feel the bliss, meditation becomes easy. Because you will naturally be attracted to the bliss. And that attraction pulls you into meditation automatically.
Shakti is not something new. It has been passed down from enlightened Guru to student for thousands of years in India and is still happening today.
In the west, we often get caught up in the teaching part of spirituality, missing the real enlightenment that is happening at the level of energy. For it never happens in the thinking process, no matter how much teaching you acquire. It happens underneath the words at the level of energy.
That is why so many travel to far off lands to find a Guru. You can read their books, follow their teachings. But it is in sitting in the Shakti of an enlightened teacher where realy spiritual transformation happens.
But if going to some far off ashram to live with an enlightened teacher doesn't suit you, you can also receive this same Shakti Energy through sound. By listening to some very unique meditation music, Shakti is transmitted to you through the sounds that you hear.
That means you can meditate at home, on the train, while going for a walk and have the energy of bliss transmitted to you through any speakers or headphones. You can sleep to it, play it in the background at home but especially, you can use it to take you meditations to a whole new level of bliss.
