Suggestions On Ways To Meditate

There are so many teachings about how to meditate that it can be confusing to figure out what works.

Keep reading and you will learn the simple yet powerfully effective way to meditate.

Here's a secret: Your very nature is peace, love and bliss.

Everyone who has attained a deep state of meditation will tell you this same thing.

Then why don't you experience it?

Because of your identification with your mind. Every thought, feeling, desire, fear and emotion that arises, you grab hold of and say "this is me." So you are not concerned with your true nature, you are concerned with what you want, your problems, your desires, your judgements. You never experience this moment, you only experience your mind's interpretation of the moment.

When you can move beyond the identification with the mind, you will experience your true nature.

So you don't actully attain peace, love and bliss. Rather, you let go of all of the mind activity that clouds your true nature until all that is left is peace, love and bliss.

So how do you do this?

In two words: Be present.

Take a moment to close your eyes, sit up straight and notice the feeling of your breath moving in and out of your nose. Don't try and regulate your breath, just breathe naturally and notice the feeling of the breathing moving in and out of your nose. Try this for 20 seconds.

Did you do this? Since breathing is happening in the moment, when you notice your breathing, you are present!

It is this simple!

Now close your eyes again and again notice your breathing, but also notice your thoughts.

Now this is the most difficult part in meditation. Because you are used to identifying with your thoughts.

Let's say you have the thought "I have to go to work tomorrow."

It is possible to just notice that thought, as a sound, as words passing by. But what happens in an instant is you identify with that thought. You identify with the "I" in that sentence and suddenly you are picturing yourself in different scenes going to work tomorrow, reminding yourself of all of the things you have to do, your judgments about your job, your responsibilities. And on and on it goes.

But if you look, it was simply a passing thought that you could watch come and go. Instead, a half hour could go by with you going from one thought to another before you realize you were caught up.

But the moment you are caught up (a good signal is that you stop noticing your breath) and you see you are caught up, just come back the present moment.

You will see in this, how easy it is to leave this moment and get lost in your thinking. That is an addiction to leave this moment, to avoid experiencing this moment.

So this is the other important part of meditation:

Practice feeling the sensations you are feeling in this moment. It isn't to define them, or describe them, or judge them. Just to feel whatever sensations are there. Accept the sensations, allow yourself to feel them.

Because if you are focused on what you are feeling as sensation, you will not be caught up in thinking and thus you will begin to experience this moment.

And no matter what sensations are there, if you allow yourself to feel them, there is peace. And that peace will turn into bliss and love. All from simply sitting with your eyes closed, noticing your breathing and allowing yourself to feel whatever sensations that arise.

The habit is to get out of feeling the sensation in this moment, that is why it is good to use a technique like watching your breath to help keep you pressent.

So try this now:

Close your eyes, notice your breathing and allow yourself to feel whatever sensations are there, without commentary, without judgement, without defining them. Just to feel. Try this for 30 seconds right now. Give yourself the 30 seconds.

This is an easy way to be present. And in this, more and more you will be detached from the mind. The mind will become simply a tool. You will not be the mind's tool! And you will grow very quickly in peace and bliss.

Other suggestions on ways to meditate

Suggestion one:  Notice the feeling of you breath moving in and out of your nose.

Suggestion two: Notice every thought arising and dissappearing without getting involved with them

Suggestion three:  Notice the space between the breaths.

Suggestion three: Notice the sensation of existing in this moment.  The feeling that you exist.  You cannot do this with the mind, you canot think it, you have to feel it as sensation.
