Teachings on conscious awareness
Conscious awareness is what you are at your essence.
In truth, it is not something you do, it is what you are. It is is what
everything is. Everything arises out of conscious awareness and
everything disappears back into conscious awareness. No matter
what is here, conscious awareness is always here.
You cannot do conscious awareness. But, if I say “just do nothing”
you will most likely not realize the awareness that is here. Because
the tendency is to be caught up in thoughts, to be involved with
thinking. There is an extreme attachment to believing we are our
thoughts and functioning solely in mental perception.
We believe that thinking is what we are. And that involvement with
thinking keeps us from realizing that consciousness that is here.
We are lost in the content of thoughts rather than the essence of
thoughts, what is aware of the thoughts, where the thoughts come from.
We impose our identification with thinking on top of consciousness
and therefore we are unaware of the infinite consciousness that is
Look yourself: what is aware of this moment? Look back on yourself and find that which is aware of this moment. That is aware you are reading. That is aware you are breathing. That is consciousness. It is the same consciousness in everyone and everything. That which is looking through your eyes is looking through mine.
But still we get caught up in thinking. We are pulled back into perceiving this moment through thinking.
And so there are all the spiritual practices and meditation techniques that calm the mind enough so that we can begin to be grounded in conscious awareness. If you practice a simple technique like repeating a mantra, your mind will no longer be able to be lost in its mental noise, it will be focused on the mantra, the meaning of the mantra, the sound of the mantra, the feeling that the mantra creates. And in this way, the mantra will begin to burn up that obsession with being lost in thinking and awaken conscious awareness.
Something as simply as watching your breath can begin to awaken awareness. Because your attention will be on something that is happening in this moment outside of thinking. And just in keeping your attention on breathing, you begin to be aware of the present instead of lost in thinking.
And in being present, attention opens up into awareness. You begin to feel presence, that feeling of consciousness. It feels good. It feels peaceful, blissful, loving, nurturing. It feels like home, free of stress, free of limitations and heaviness. And so your attention will begin to gravitate towards consciousness.
Over time, you will begin to feel conscious awareness is what you naturally are. It won't be something you do. It is more that you learn to let go of your involvement with thinking. You allow thinking, you allow emotions, you allow sensations. You allow it all without involving yourself with it. And in that allowing, your attention is released from mental identification and separation and can rest in its pure state of conscious awareness. And by resting your attention in itself, your experience of consciousness expands.
You are awareness itself, consciousness itself. Not as an identification, but consciousness is just what is here. There does not have to be an “I” in it at all. Awareness is the backdrop of everything, the essence of everything. Take everything that can be taken away from this moment and consciousness is left. Put everything back and still it is all consciousness. It is all that.
That awareness can contract into identifying with thinking and in that, you can become a person with a memory, with likes and dislikes, with desires and worries. But that is just an identification with thinking. Not for a second should you believe that is solely what you are or even that there is a you that is separate from consciousness.
Consciousness is simply identifying with thoughts to become a someone. It is a play. Consciousness can contract into being a person and live that experience.
The easiest way to awaken consciousness and expand your consciousness is through receiving Shakti, the energy vibration of consciousness that awakens you to enlightenment.
